Biking for Non-Bikers (Camayan Beach Resort, Subic Bay)

I find biking to be very relaxing. When I was younger, I used to bike with my sisters and cousins around the village a lot. It’s the kind of thing we do every afternoon (always with someone watching us though). My sisters and I are home-ish kinds of girls; mommy would say we can only go out around 4 – when it’s not too hot – and we have to be home before 6 – before the sun goes down. It’s a bit funny if you think of it. Most tweens would be allowed to go out around the village at that age range, but I guess it comes with the fact that we’re all girls. We enjoyed that time we had anyway. The speed and the feeling of wind kissing your face is… wow.

I’ve been thinking a lot of purchasing a *real* bike – you know, the cooler ones which people who want to get into the hobby use? Early last year I’ve been asking around, and a beginner’s bike would cost maybe 16-20k – but don’t consider me an expert. My point is, I decided not to purchase such if I know I wouldn’t put as much time into it. I’m interested to do more things that would fit a person’s lifetime.

As an alternative, I’ve been searching for places where people can actually rent bikes and have a “beginner’s trail” we can use. Nothing for bike addicts. Once in a while, it’s just really nice to sort of relive childhood memories. It’s always a good feeling.

I found out about the one in Camayan Beach Resort in Subic Bay from Vianca.

You could choose your bike and rent one for P180/person/hour. That comes with a helmet, a small bottle of water (which I don’t think is enough) and a guide or guides who will take you around the trail. The number of guides will depend on the size of your group.

Since there were 5 of us, we had 2 guides – one in front of the pack, and one at the back. This is the pack:

Here is Joie.

And brave (scared) Nikka, wobble wobble.

There are no requirements for joining. As long as you know how to bike, you should be fine. The trail has 5 levels. If you’re too tired to take the next ones, one of the guides will take you back to the resort. That’s the reason why there are 2 of them!

Although the trail is composed of different terrains, most of them are asphalt and should be safe. The only hard part is biking up.

As part of Level 2, we were taken to some of these spooky bunkers.

Spooky cousin Alexis, the only boy during the ride.

Along the way, in one of our rest periods, we met a goat.

Who acted pretty much like a dog.

The four of us reached only until Level 3. It was way too hot! I think it was noontime when we were done.

I’ve been inviting a couple of friends to go back, so maybe we can finish until the last level. That also means starting waayyy earlier. Like maybe 7:00am.

You know other places that offer the same experience? Let me know! And please don’t say something like Luneta or Enchanted Kingdom or whaddever.
